UIG Collaborates with Big Canoe Trails Committee

Photos and Story by Liz Scherer, Smoke Signals News

This week, we had an amazing collaboration between the Trails Committee and a hardworking team of volunteers from Utilities Inc. of Georgia (UIG), led by Ashley Wedeles. The UIG crew offered services and equipment to help improve our Cabin Loop Trail, located next to the historic 1880s cabin by the Jeep Trail.

Armed with their skid and plenty of muscle, they worked alongside our Trails Committee to grade areas above the trail and upslope to divert water away, helping to preserve and protect this trail. Together, we also tackled some heavily eroded sections of the trail, rebuilding them with gravel and sand provided by our POA.

The BCTC team has a Drainage Engineer/Civil Engineer (JR) who reviewed the site earlier this week with Liz Scherer and advised on the best water and erosion mitigations to apply. She coordinated with the POA and UIG teams to get everything set for this morning and guided the group efforts. The POA delivered the gravel on time at the right location, which was crucial to our success.

Thank you to UIG for their generous help and everyone who pitched in! It’s so cool to see our community and local businesses come together for a project like this. The hardest work on restoring this trail is done. We still have some small improvements to do in the coming days that the Trails Committee will finish.
