Celebrate the EPA's Annual Fix a Leak Week

Are you ready to chase down leaks?

Celebrate the EPA's annual Fix a Leak Week, March 17 through 23, 2025!

Check for Leaks

The average household can waste nearly 10,000 gallons of water in leaks each year. Ten percent of homes have leaks that waste 90 gallons or more per day!

Fixing easily-corrected household water leaks can save homeowners about 10 percent on their water bills.

Tips for Finding Leaks

To check for leaks in your home, first determine whether you're wasting water and then identify the source of the leak.

• Identify toilet leaks by placing a drop of food coloring in the toilet tank. If any color shows up in the bowl after 10 minutes, there is a leak.

• Examine faucet gaskets and pipe fittings for water on the outside of the pipe to check for surface leaks.

• Inspect your sprinkler system for missing or broken sprinkler heads before ramping up your watering efforts.

• Use the EPA checklist to keep track of your search for leaks: Detect and Chase Down Leaks Home Checklist - En Español

• Find more helpful water conservation tips in the Water Smart section of our website.
